Adjustable ignition/cdi

Post by Red Eft Performance »

Ive had a bunch of people asking about this so I figured it deserves its own thread.

For the money this is the best one I know of. Most of the adjustable cdis ive seen just have a knob that you turn to control the amount of advance or retard and they go for just as much if not more money. The MSD unit your able to program the whole curve. Can switch between to different maps. And for the drag racers out there you are able to set up Launch rpm control which would really help get that 60ft down.

All the high end 2 stroke ignitions retard the timing at high RPM's... yea I know that seems wrong but they are trying to increase the exhaust gas temp to make the pipe more effective.
The one I run drops the timing back 15 degrees... I didnt see anything in the instructions for the MSD that said you can program in retarded timing although I didnt see anything that said you couldnt either.
If your running NOS or boost you also want your ign timing to retard.

Another thing is you will have to run a battery to power the MSD according to the instructions

That's right a 2 stroke ignition curve is opposite of a 4 stroke curve total timing advance happens at low rpm as rpm rises and the pipe starts to work timing gets pulled back. Yes you can do that with this. You program the entire curve you can add and pull timing at any point.

I'm more interested in it for my 4 stroke build... should be able to program second curve to retard for nitrous.
I like 2 strokes but face it the market isnt supporting 2 strokes as much and it will only get worse.
Building a GY6 for my next drag scoot.
Nice thing is I get MSD for dealer cost :ndance:

I was looking at this MSD 4217. Read through the manual. Looks pretty awesome that you can use your PC to set these ignition curves. My thoughts are though that this is a lot of work without the help of a dyno to tune on? Also, I think that one probably has to have a very good understanding of how timing curves work and how these eninges work. If you think about it, people are asking these OEM ignition systems to support a lot of power abd performance mods. With all of the work which is put into big bore kits , pipes, etc, this could be a very valuable tool. I had a programmable system which controled fuel also abd it when it was dialed in on my turbo car, the wheel horsepower was increased quite a bit. Of course I also had a tuner write the maps for it on the dyno which was not cheap.

Has anyone used this yet? I would love to have it assuming someone could actually tune it for me.
