Electically dead

Post by F James »

I have a 86 Spree which my daughter said "it just died" It seems to be an electrical problem. With key on and kill switch in run position, the only thing response I can find in that the horn works and the turn signal lights (will not flash). No head light, no starter, no sign of opwer to instrument panel. Where do I start to troubleshoot?

No Power

Post by CudaDon »

If the horn works, the fuse is good and power is getting in and out of the ign switch. It sounds like a disconnected or broken wire after the ign switch. Pull off the horn cover and upper inst cover. The problem wire should be solid black. Using a test light would help you find it.

Thanks, I will check the horn and signal side fdor a broken wire. However, what bothers me is that the horn and signals work regardless what position the "kill switch" is in. I thought the kill switch cuts power to everything?

Kill Switch

Post by CudaDon »

Kill switch has no power. It grounds out the CDI to kill the eng. The ign switch does the same.

The key switch is what cuts the power. Any motorcycle I've ever seen had power to the horn, blinkers, etc. if the key is on, and kill switch off (if it has a battery). On the KE100 enduro, you can shut the headlight off with the key, but keep it running.

You need to check for spark, the blinkers, horn and tail light should work with just the key on (no other lights until it starts) I dont want to sound like a * but is there gas in it? Your gas gauge might not work...

Also remember to hold the brake on to get the starter to work. I find everyone new to Sprees gets caught by this. Chuk

It sounds like the starter isn't working (the headlights and IP don't light until the engine runs.) Check wiring to starter and that the brake switches are working. You can also go through the troubleshooting section in the factory service manual for this.

Elec Prob

Post by CudaDon »

As I said, the key switch does not supply any elec power to make the eng run. It supplies power for the starter, horn, stop light and signals.
Will it kick start? A Honda Spree will kick start with the key off, if you discounect the ground (green) wire to the ign switch.
