also, if gas comes out of that loose hose (that hangs near the wheel) after a carb clean, does that mean i'm running too rich? which screw changes that?

the other screw is the airscrew. The idle should have a spring on it. If you are dumping gas you could be running rich because your float is not adjusted correctly.

Fuel Drain

Post by CudaDon »

The hose near the rear wheel is the fuel drain for the carb.
Check the screw near the bottom of the carb, this is for draining
the carb before taking ot off. This screw should be tight.

got it. now how do you adjust 'richness'? is there no way of doing it without taking apart the carb?

Carb Adj

Post by CudaDon »

You can adjust the idle mixture and speed only.
The top screw with the spring is idle speed.
The one under it is mixture.
The staring point for this one is:
Pre 86 - 1-7/8 turns out
86 - 1-1/2 turns
87 - 1-3/8 turns.
This is the starting point. You might have to vary it a little, once
you have the idle speed set (warm).

mixture is the amount of air versus fuel the carb send to the engine, correct? how does this screw control that?

The mixture screw is the amount of fuel added for idle.
The idle speed screw is the amount of air.
The fuel amount after idle is controled by the main jet.
This is not adjustable.

if you wanna get the most performance out of your carb turn the air screw all the way in then turn in 1.5 turns out. then rev your engine as high as it will go and turn the air screw out till you get the highest rev i got mine going 33mph like that

*?? and also you might have an iowa spree pipe if it will only go 25mph. the difference between normal and iowa sprees is that iowa sprees have restrictors in the exhaust pipe that make it only go 25mph to go along with rules and regulations in the state of iowa such as a moped cannot go over 25mph in iowa and you are allowed to ride at 14 and you have to ride 3 feet from the curb but yea the exhaust is my guess....

Can't you lean the engine out too much by trying to achieve the highest RPM's with the air screw?

On many carburetors the idle circuit can act as a high speed or wide open throttle jet adding additional fuel. I suspect this is true of the Spree carb as I found on my sprees that I could get a few more MPH by adjusting the Idle Mixture on the road. Wide open throttle adjustment would be easier.
