I think it was .35mm for the Reed sheet.kwazydave wrote:Thank you for all the info. Did you ever measure the thickness of the carbon fiber reed paper? I am interested in doing that. with a pipe like that mlm would a person want to change the engagement rpm?patthesoundguy wrote:Take off with the stock gearing was very close and with the latest version should be pretty much the same as stock if not a little better. When you get on the pipe its like a swift kick in the behindyou'll be holding on tigher from 10-15 MPH to when the revs top out.

Re: Questions about 87 nq50 mods.
I wound up ordering .3mm reed paper when i ordered the pipe. It has a little curl to it that worried me a little. I dont know if that is typical for the thin sheet to be curled or if it is a defect. I ported the intake elbow and made the reeds today. The reeds dont sit exactly flat but very close. I ran it when done and it seems to run fine, but starting was a little finicky. I ll see how it goes with some time on them. What I did today made a noticeable difference starting out from a dead stop. The engagement rpms are a bit higher so I know it is running stronger.

Nice thread! I'd be interested to know how your reeds perform over time. I've just managed to find and buy today the larger reed block and intake pipe off an Elite(Pal in NZ)and will be looking at a bbk and exhaust shortly... Did you use carbon fibre reed material? If so, how do you cut it out?
Re: Questions about 87 nq50 mods.
I used carbon fiber reed paper. I used a small cut off disc in a dremel type tool to carve them out. When I was done I sanded the edges with 600 paper to make sure there were no sharp edges.

Sounds like you are going down the same road as me and are trying to get the most out of your NQ
I've not long bought an '84 Nifty, non variated AF05E with around 3200km(2000miles)on the clock. It already goes pretty well as is but will be doing various mods over time to get things going even better, would be good to stay in contact and bounce a few ideas around
Re: Questions about 87 nq50 mods.
I used a yamaha zuma as a test mule with my latest mod. Before I ported the intake and made the carbon reeds I compared acceleration. I am quite sure it is variable drive and from a standing start the zuma would pull me by at least 4 scooter lengths, but then the spree would make that up plus 4 lengths and then top end looked pretty even. The zuma maybe had 1/2mph on me. After the last mod the zuma would still pull me from the start but only about 2 lengths and then I pulled past it by a bunch. Top end put the spree up by at least 1 mph. Today I milled .06 in off of the drive pulley to change the gearing. Of course I lost take off torque but made 42 mph up top. Then i put a .03 spacer back in, between the pulley halves and that netted 40 mph and a little better take off. By making the drive pulley bigger it actually lowers the engagement rpm so that really hurts the take off. I may look into raising the engagement to see if take off with the .06 pulley setup can become acceptable.
