Honda stock filter oil load - You're over-oiling your filter

Post by noiseguy »

Folks:

Just for giggles I took a stock Honda Spree element and weighed out the amount of oil in it. I've always known that most folks over-oil filters, but was surprised at how little oil is actually in these things.

My method was to take a stock element, weight it, wash it with soap + water to remove the oil, dry, and re-weigh.

What I found is that the element holds just 2 grams of oil. To put that in perspective, that's about 3/4 teaspoons of motor oil. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'll typically work about 2 caps in, which is more like 2 tablespoons... or over 6X the amount of the stock load.
