Just looking for some input.
Bike is an 01 Elite S 50cc. Just recently bought it, has 1800 miles on it. Has punched out OEM exhaust and removed the clutch limiter. I run ethanol-free fuel and Honda oil. Plug is brand new and reads a nice toasted brown.
When the bike is cold, it occasionally starts kind of hard. Once it's started from cold, almost every ride, the bike has a really tough time getting up to speed for the first time. Smokes pretty heavily and then clears up. Once it's cleared, there's very little issue. Runs well at top speed, and gives little fuss. Maybe a touch of hesitation from a dead stop but nothing major.
Any ideas what this could be? Bystarter perhaps?
Any help here would be great!

Re: No Acceleration/Smoke/Hard start - 01 Elite S
Greetings:
Welcome!
The excessive smoke and poor performance suggest you may have a leaky oil pump. They ALL seem to leak, eventually, but perhaps to varying degrees. Are the symptoms proportionate to the duration of time since last startup? A leaky fuel valve AND float valve could contribute too. (Both limit fuel flow with engine off, and so both have to fail to allow unwanted excess fuel to leak into the crankcase) The bystarter default position is "choke", so a few ccs of fuel leaking overnight plus an enriched mixture would cause smoke, four-stroking and lousy performance until the bysrarter closes. That takes about 2-3 minutes.

It does seem to be slightly progressively worse the longer it sits, yes.Wheelman-111 wrote:Greetings:

I would add that the one or two times it's started hard have not occurred since. It starts immediately, but just will not get going until it coughs up whatever it's got in it's throat. Then it's off to the races.

Very, very happy to have stumbled across this post gentlemen, I believe you may have solved an issue i've also been experiencing for some time with my stock AF18. Exhibits the EXACT same symptoms you speak of for the first few minutes of running then clears out and runs fine without any issues.
I will investigate this further...

Re: No Acceleration/Smoke/Hard start - 01 Elite S
So, a quick recap on this. Happened to fill the bike up with pre-mix the other day on accident. Made the symptoms of this issue a hundred times worse. Almost certain that Wheelman's suggestion of the leaking oil pump is the problem.
My question now is, can the pump be rebuilt/cleaned/serviced, or am I looking at buying a new one?
Thanks!

Buy a plug and remove the pump. Easiest way seeing as you already have premix in there.
