Tranny/Primary oil change

Post by roadcapDen »

couldn't find in the archives.
Is there no drain plug for tranny oil, just the fill plug?
If so do I drain it to replace it by just laying it down?
Thanks,

Yes, the fill plug is also the drain plug. Either pull it out with a dropper or set it on its side to drain.

when refilling, set the scoot on its stand and fill it just till the oil starts to come out. (if it is coming out a lot, wait a little and let it drain out before putting in the plug.)

What I did, was use a needle attachment on my tranny fluid bottle, and remove the drain plug. I connected the bottle to the overflow drain tube on the tranny, and forced the fluid in, it flushed out all the nasties! that oil was really bad, and I'm glad I changed it!

The specs say 90cc of oil is what you put back in. When I drained mine about a third of that came out. When I added the new oil no where near 90cc would go in before it started coming out the fill hole.

Anyone else have this issue? Could the specs be wrong?

I think the issue is that there is a ton of space below the hole. The only way to get ALL of the fluid out is cracking open the transmission (which I recently did). When I refilled it, it took about 90cc as I recall. I didn't have gear oil on hand, so I used regular 4 stroke oil, which I'll probably have to replace at some point. I think that gear oil is much more suitable. The regular oil seems like it would get whipped up fairly quickly.

I thougth I saw in the manual that 10w40 was OK to put in...when I drained mine it was a creamy color, which usually means water/moisture...although mine had not been run for quite a while when I found it...that could explain. Question...is 10w40 OK to put in or is there something better recommended.

There is a lot of debate over that. The manual says 10w40 oil and others will say 80-90 gear oil. All of the new scooters out there recommend the gear oil.
