Another Idle Question

Post by antoniobustamante »

I,ve been doing a lot of reading on this forum. Followed by all the cleaning and what not. I have an 86 spree good compression, petcock works, new gas & oil, new pug 8. It runs fine and starts great but wont idle unless the air fuel mix screw is closed. I'd rather not run it like that. The air box is sealed good, i even oiled the filter as per something i read on this site. Off the subject does anyone run knobbys or know if any would fit the spree.
-Thanks, Antonio from WI

Your bystarter is bad or you still have dirt in the carb. The motor is getting air from somwhere you have to find it. When its idling spray carb cleaner around the carb then the intake and see if it revs up, if it does you found your leak. If it doesnt then clean the carb again. I had to clean mine 5-6 times before I could get it to idle.

Thanks for the help. I plan on running it year round. There has to be air coming in then. I'll test that today. The by starter is functioning fine. I had that carb apart 4 times cleaning, blowing air, blowing solvent throu every little hole each time. I put a clear lawn mower fuel filter on after the 3rd.
I bought a fuel/air mix guage and o2 sensor, just wondering if this will work on a 2 stroke. I'm thinking of puting a temp gauge on the exhaust/head pipe.

the 2 stroke oil will kill the O2 sensor...2 strokes use speed density systems

so its an iowa, thats not bad. it just means you have to drill out the restricter. in the exaust flange there will be a washer welded in it, just drill it out smooth and your good.

thats it? i was under the impression that the final drive gears were different, and/or there was some kind of restricting plate on the front clutch.

It is geared down a little, you will never get it over 25 without changing the final drive.
When your by starter expands you are introducing more air into the motor, you are not getting enough gas through ther carb. Did you say you had an inline filter in yours? Get rid of it, you are on a gravity fuel feed system, those filters are for systems with fuel pumps. Check your main jet again and check your needle position on the "butterfly" of the carb. Clean the carb again and check your float good, make sure you fuel stop pin is not binding up.

the manual doesn't show one...and I could never get my scooter to work right with one. And unless you are either not using the fuel strainer in the tank, or have large holes in it, that should be sufficient.

thats what i have a universal filter for a riding lawn mower but maybe they (the lawnmowers) have fuel pumps. i guess the way to test it would be to disconnect it from the carb suck on the vac line and see if the fuel flows freely. Its a pretty big filter. i'll take it out as part of my process of elimination. i can't wait to get this thing out on the road. first stop, the local tavern. <edit> anyone want to sell a strainer that'll fit 86 spree?

Antonio, if you mean an inline fuel strainer, I can include the one off my Spree with your parts tomorrow. It's just a universal filter. Sprees do not have fuel pumps. The vacuum from the motor opens the petcock and allows fuel to flow to the carburetor.
