Mounting tubes tires

Post by MnMike »

I’m struggling! Picked up a pair of Aero 50s- literal Barn find (insert barn or cow emoji here)

Both runners/ plastics better than good/ tires rotted- Trying to throw fat or maybe phat (depending the area of the world or age bracket you identify with) white walls on it (Kenda SR550) and find myself traumatizing my brand new tubes whilst trying to mount

Using Spoons, inflating slightly before inserting in tire, trying not to insert tire spoons deep

To anyone who is a successful 10inch tire mounter I ask for your assistance
Thanks

Mounting COLD tires is much harder than mounting WARM tires that have been laying in the sun for an hour.
Inflating tube slightly is NOT a good method.
Primary point to keep in mind is that the tire bead opposite the side you are trying to mount MUST be kept in the CENTER of the wheel to allow most possible room for bead to overcome the wheel edge.
When inserting spoon into tire, fingers accompanying spoon to push tube away from edge is my method. This method does require some tolerance to the pressure your finger will experience.
Even well-seasoned mechanic will occasionally pinch a tube.

Zip tie method, best thing ever and dish soap using three tire spoons.

I insert tubes into tires first off the rim.
Using zip ties, close the tire down together without pinching the tube. Go entire way around tire with zip ties
Lube up edges of tire with dish soap
Insert the tire valve into hole and use nut to hold it on
I always use a wood working clamp to clamp the tire tight aginst the rim then screw the nut down
Keeping the wood clamp in place
Use tire spoons to go around the tire
Place another wood clamp at like 9 oclock, and 3 oclock
Then insert all three tire spoons and work it on the reat of the way
When done, remove tire clamps, zip ties, tighten nut and inflate. Celebrate with a victory lap

Best way I hve found to mount tires and the clamps keep you from fighting it

In my experience, the tube needs to be inflated to the point of being a "tube" if it's flat, out of the box. I get pinch flats if I don't put a little air into it first.
If it's an old tube this isn't generally an issue.
