non running 2001 ish honda elite

Post by Beneathhappy »

We decided to get the old scooter out of storage, and after tightening a few loose bolts, we were back cruising the streets. One day, while riding it a few blocks to my workplace maybe going around 25 mph it started dying, and I coasted the rest of the way to work.

I initially assumed it was the spark plug cap, since it had been rigged to stay on, but it was actually secured pretty well. It had rained that night, and I was slow to cover the pod-style air filter from the rain. The scooter would start right back up, but it acted like it had a rev limiter.

After pushing it home, I drained the carburetor and ordered a new coil. I crafted a leak-down tester using some small steel plates, an old bike tire (for the one-way valve), nuts, bolts, clamps, and a pressure gauge. I replaced both crankshaft seals, the base gasket, that pricey Viton O-ring Polini uses, the reed valves, and even bought a new smaller-diameter carb. I’ve also replaced the CDI and just installed a new stator.

I must be missing something obvious here. The scooter has a Polini Corsa, PG Long, a 24mm flatslide clone (I also have a genuine 28mm OKO and a 26mm clone), 9:1 gears, and an aftermarket variator. I replaced the key switch too, due to a lost key, but that was before these symptoms started.

it also had 95psi read for compression that should still run though right?
the motor has quite a few miles on it and the bore/piston to my surprise looked way better than imagined nothing to be concerned of
i did replace a fuel filter on a local car here and the gas burnt my skin maybe its my age or ....
also replacing a battery in the trail tech vapor temp gauges is a pita

I’ll take any advice and gladly report back with any findings.

What brand and number spark plug was in there when this all happened? Are you holding the throttle wide open when you do cylinder compression test? What did your leak-down test show and how many pounds of air did you pump it up to? If you have resolved your issues then please reply with your solution(s). You should have replaced the plug cap even though it was "rigged to stay on".

I have always ran a NGK BPR8HS plug. The throttle was held open during compression test. Leak down test held 5 psi strong (besides splitting the case every gasket was replaced) I let it go @ 5 min. as for the spark plug cap that metal retaining clip inside had left and i did have a paperclip replacing it then packing tape holding it to the plastic cooling shroud things. I have been busy with work, but I did find that the new coil I have the plug cap is faulty.. and i found a old cap from another scooter that does ohm out and attached it on the end of the "new" coil and that passed testing. I plan on adding the "new" coil and giving all ignition components a new personal ground if same symptoms show. I really don't know what else to try. thanks for the reply
