Cant get my Elite to Start

Post by Dac »

ok guys i need your help, this has me dumb founded and im getting *

ok so my 92 honda elite 50 wont start. it ran fine one day when i was riding it, stop to go inside and eat and it wouldnt start after that

it has compresion , great spark, new plug, i tore apart my carb. and cleaned that.
what im i missing, every thing is there i dont know why it wont start

when i put my new plug in i kicked it about 5-6 times with out giving it any gas then took the plug back out and it was wet.
i left the plug out over night to let the gas dry and put it all back to gether and still nothing!

im going crazy, what im i missing? i was thinking it was the kill switch (like came unpluged) but then i wouldnt get spark right?

crank the engine over a couple good times without the spark plug to clean it out, then try and start it, if it doesnt start check your case for oil

ok so just about 5-10 minutes ago i took off my carb. and took it in to a guy i know to clean it out good.

i typed this in school. when i got home i opened the door to my shed and my moped was sitting in gas. there was gas every way from the motor about 3 feet.
something is wrong with the float i believe, the guy who is going to clean it out is also going to fix i think. he said he had the same thing happen with his 4 wheeler.

so he is going to fix that , have the carb. torn apart and boil it in Yamaha racing gas over night , and get me a new air filter. if this dont work im going to go crazy

Your carb is definitely dirty... your float bowl isn't sealing either, and it doesn't sound like the vacuum-operated petcock is working right (broken.) I'd check to see if you're getting fuel through the vacuum line to the petcock. This will cause flooding.

Also, change your plug, it must be fouled by now.

i took the carb. in and had it cleaned and resembled right at a small engine repair and rebuild shop
ok last night i took out the plug and undid the gas hose ,kicked it about 200 times then put the put it back and i got it running for about 2 minutes the it died because the idle is to low and it wouldn't start again
Then today i went out there and did the same thing and nothing. my step dad decided to put some oil in were the plug goes (not a d*** clue why or how) but it started. i revved the * out of it then took it for a ride, it was kinda slow (like 25-30) but it ran ok. i shut if off then started it right away and it started good. When i was riding there was something rattling like *.
Took it home shut it off, now the only way to get it to start is to put a very little amount of oil in the spark plug hole

my step dad thinks it needs new rings... I have no clue... any one know anything that might help me?

Probially poor compression/leak. The oil is enough to fill the gap and give enough preassure for it to start. Once it's started, the heat causing the piston to expand enough to keep enough preassure to keep the enigne running. Once it cools, repeat. Probially needs new rings. Take off the cylinder and see if theirs any scoreing.

You will need to go to the Honda shop and get new rings. Or go to VTcycles.com and pick up a new jug/piston for $100. Tell them we sent you. You cannot "red neck" a compression issue; you're just going to damage the engine worse as you head to a catastrophic failure.

If it was a 4 stroke engine, you could redkneck it, but in a 2 stroke, as noiseguy said, you'll damage the engine worse.

ok so today i got out side and took the head off, pushed the piston down and it doesn't look bad at all
so i took the (i think its called the jug, having a stupid moment ) and realized my piston is missing a ring!
it should have 2 but it only had one!
im going to call a honda dealer tomorrow and try to order rings. any one know if they still have 92 honda elite 50 sr rings or how much they would cost?

Should be about $30 / set.

If the piston / jug were scored, I'd tell you to buy an aftermarket set. Sounds like you caught this early enough to save it. Well done!

Be careful with the rings; they're cast and very fragile.

well if you only have one ring on the piston the other one is at the bottom of the case in pieces, its an easy fix for me but you have fun, live & learn!
Can't afford speed then stay away from it!
