85 Spree with stripped crankshaft. Suggestions?

Post by enginjon »

I have a stock '85 spree with the crankshaft splines stripped where the drive pulley goes. Anyone have suggestions for rebuild/replace for cheap? Thanks

Find a junk motor, replace the shaft.

They have what you want on ebay right now , just look up Spree motor. Someone has the the bottom end of the motor and I think there is another but it is just missing one of the outer cases. 8)

There was a post somewhere about this. It happens when you don't run a thrust washer between the shaft and pulley... called "pencilling the crankshaft."

I believe the cheap fix is to get several thrust washers and a new inner pulley. Use the thrust washers to get the right offset from the case (so that the belt runs straight,) and then torque it down really tight with an impact wrench.
