New petcock doesnt fit old (allegedly '85) gas tank

The petcock on my '85 spree crapped out and so bought a new one from discounthondaparts.com. It is the correct part for the '85, but was noted as "replaces part xyz" in their online catalogue. Tried to assemble it but the bolt on the gas tank is bigger than the nut on the petcock. Compared it to the old petcock, and that mounting bolt on the new one is definately smaller. So I saw that the item # for the '84 and '85 spree petcock and fuel tanks are the same, but '86 is different for both. Are the 84-86 tank and/or petcocks interchangable or not? If not, how do I tell if I have an '86 tank? Any ideas on how to fix this problem (i.e., do I need to exchange the petcock or replace the tank so they match?). I just want this stupid scoot to run again, before the d*** winter arrives!!!

84-85 have the small nut. 86-87 have the big nut. sounds to me that someone changed the gas tank at some point.
