Adding a CVT to the spree...
hello all. i have had a spree since spring. i have notice that because of the lack of a transmission, our scooter has trouble making it up from a standing start. i am a student of engineering and with some of my free time have been thinking about engineering and building a CVT transmission for the honda spree.
I have i few questions for all of you:
1. are any of you interested in having a CVT on your spree?
2. if so, what criteria must it pass/have?
3. what would you be willing to pay for one?
P.S. It will be a true bolt on modification (no cutting of body or shaving for clearance) just take some parts off, and put others on.

i personally do not own a spree but if i did this would be something to buy.im really interested in this and i hope you are in fact possible of engineering a no modification bolt on kit.
if i get my hands on a spree and you have this available for a reasonable price i will buy it in a heart beat . the thing is with something like this make one is great but making many would be amazing. the thing is were you have to invest money in a scooter from the mid 80's with no chance of more being made.
How ever i say go for it. even if you are not able to make many making one would be taking a step foreword for all spree fans everywhere.

all you really would need to do would be to design a drive pully thats identical the the dio drive pulley but small enough to fit inside the case for the spree. the driven pulley is the same type on the dio and spree. if you did make one you would have make the inner drive face, the ramp plate, and the outer drive face or else design it to use the stock outer drive face. you would also need to incorporate a drive boss. i would definitely buy one. if you make one of these and did it right they would definitely sell. not sure how much i would pay. a high speed pulley kit goes for around 50 bucks so i would probably pay that give or take a little. let me know.

i dont know. it seems if the difference is amazing it seems like i would pay up to 100$ for it. the more i think about it the cooler this sounds. go for it dude. make at least one

Count me in.
Man, with Noiseguy's muffler $125 and this CVT $100, good money spent!
This little Spree is a blast! Yeah, right now mine is barely making it at 15 mph, but I'm hooked!

If you want speed then start off with an engine that can be built for speed, and if you watch the chopper/car builders on tv they are not college educated idiots just common sense boys that will build for you cuz you can't
respect the blue collar workers, money, not your brains will get you what you want!

Can't afford speed then stay away from it!
ok i agree with this some, you could have the most common sense ever but that isn't always going to pay the bills. brains are just as inportend as having hands(you NEED them)stillspeeding wrote:If you want speed then start off with an engine that can be built for speed, and if you watch the chopper/car builders on tv they are not college educated idiots just common sense boys that will build for you cuz you can'trespect the blue collar workers, money, not your brains will get you what you want!
rather you get your knowledge though a collage class or taking stuff apart as the way i learned. if you know what your doing and get hands on your going to make stuff.
also with the 'chopper/car builders on tv' they just put stuff together. i could do there job,not as good quality to be fair, but its just bolting and welding. engineering parts is a hole another category. engineers make the parts that the other people put together. with out collage education making advance parts is nearly imposable. if every one relied off common sense we would all be riding bicycles.

how does this have anything to do with this thread? we all have like 50cc scooters. youre talking about built for speed? and ive seen many "common sense boys" who i would never want touching anything i own. maybe we should start a thread titled * opinions.

First off; this thread is not a top speed thread. i dont know where you may have gotten that from but, sir, you are wrong. this thread is about adding a CVT to the spree. yes, greater top speed will be one of the benefits of such a mod, but such a benefit will be minor compared to the acceleration and hill climbing improvements. If you want speed then start off with an engine that can be built for speed, and if you watch the chopper/car builders on tv they are not college educated idiots just common sense boys that will build for you cuz you can't Laughing respect the blue collar workers, money, not your brains will get you what you want!
TV is nice and all, but i wouldn't really think it wise to get all you knowledge from the tube.
moreover, i do not understand what has upset you about my goal of improving the spree. college education or not my goal, our goal, here is to improve the honda spree. your idea of improvement might be simply going fast... mine isn't.
also, i think it very arrogant for one to presume that solely because someone is in college, they have no common sense and have no respect for the blue collar worker; but even more has not done hands on common sense projects, is not currently doing hands projects, and has not ever done blue collar work.
Personally, i dont like to think of people as stupid or not. i think of stupid as choice, or series of consequential choices, that the individual makes over his/her life. as you stated... "Money, not your brain will get you what you want."

sorry, guys. thus far there has not been enough response for the cvt and therefore, i will not be dedicating much time to it- i'll let you'll know if i get some free time and end up doing anything with it in the future
