oil leak

Post by broomhilda »

Hello all
I must say that this is the most informative site I've seen! I've found all kinds of great information and guidance. Thank you. Another thank you to Greg up in MN - he has really helped me out. A good man.

I purchased a 87 spree from a guy in MI this summer. It didn't run very well when we brought it home, and since then I've torn it almost completely down.

I'm finding a lot of "little" things wrong. Like there is no plate set or screws to hold down the bystarter. Bystarter needle and spring fell out the other day. I cannot get the unit apart to even see if it can be fixed.

I've taken the carb off and now I have an oil leak - it's running down the stand. I have suspected the oil pump because it leaks every time the bike is kicked over. Could it be the oil pump - or is it leaking because there's no carb to hold the oil at bay? Any help would be appreciated.

It may be coming from the oil line. One end of the line is hooked to the oil pump and the other to the carb. Check the oil line itself for cracks or pin hole leaks. Its just a plastic hose and can be replaced easily if it is cracked. I had one where it was split right towards the end of the hose. I just cut the bad part off and reattached it. Do not run the engine until you find where that oil leak is coming from. It could also be the hose which leads from the oil reservoir to the oil pump.

oil leak

Well I took the oil tank off yesterday - lo and behold no strainer! The oil tube itself is put together backwards and the tube clips were the wrong size.

drained gas tank today and I found rust in the bottom of tank. Is rust ok?

Thanks
