speedometer

Today has been a "great" day I won't say why except on my moped problem. I'm going down the road and stop at a stop sign. turn and head off into a pretty strong wind. I check my speed and notice around I'm going around 23 mph and the needle is moving back and forth..I didn't think much of it. Later on I look and I'm going 0mph..WRONG I was going faster obviously because I was in motion. So I have no speedometer and the odometer(which is "nice" because I've been tracking my mpg lately) I checked the cables and they are connected..on the front tire one is for the front brake while the other is for the speedometer right? Any Ideas on what I should do to fix this?

First I'd disconnect the speedo cable from the instrument housing, then from the front wheel, and see if when you turn one end the other turns. If not, it's broken. If it does turn, take the front wheel off and check out the little plastic gear that makes the speedo work. If the cable is not broken, the gear is. The speedo is not a complicated system. It's either the cable or the gear.

well now I can't do anything because I have no power..nothing from the battery and I can't even start it via kickstart..Todays royally sucks for me.

Scratch that..just a broken fuse..replaced and now have power again..it won't start though

Acts like it isn't getting gas..checked the plug and it came back dry

Fixed the last problem and now it starts but the speedo still doesn't. Both ends work..the "flat end screw driver" like thing near the tire rotates as does the cable end..I spayed a little lubricating oil on both ends and got alot of rusty colored spray coming out but if each rotates it should work I would think. The material covering the cable has a small tear in an area and I looked in it to see silver so it isn't rusty there..I'm lost at this point

Take off the front wheel and look at the gearing where the speedo cable goes in. It'll be pretty obvious if you stripped the speedo gear. Should take you less than 5 minutes.

when reading this I must have missed the part about taking the cable off at the speedo instroment..I only took the cable off by the tire and spun the piece in there. I thought it meant the cable and the thing connected to the tire

When I took both off(at the tire and the speedo instroment) and moved the piece by the tire the top part that would connect to the speedo instroment didn't move. Now when I spun the tire the piece that connects to the cable(the part on the tire with the flat head screw driver like end) did spin so this makes me believe it would be the cable and not the gear..right?

So when I replace the cable I just pull the "needle" like thing out or do I do something special to get it out? I ask because after taking the nut off the "needle" piece stayed in the speedo instroment.

Your speedo wire is broken. You need a new one.

take off your speedometer. make sure the cable is on the wheel and you can see the other end. go for a quick ride. if it spins, it might be good. if it dosnt move its bad.
thats the easiest way to tell. however it might spin even if its broke. but you will get the idea

alright..I'll probably do it tomorrow as its dark out and it would be hard to see..I just hope it doesn't rain

you can unhook the cable from the speedo end, spin the tire and watch it turn, if it does pull the front tire/ brake hub and pack it with wheel bearing grease which should be done every yr. i have yet to brake any speedo cables mine are all original

I did actually do this but the piece didn't spin so it would have to be the cable
