Odd starting problem

Post by edjo »

My Elite doesn't like to start easilly when its warm. It does start but not like when its cold. When its cold it fires instantly, when its hot or warm, say shut down for about 5-35 minutes its much less eager to sart. Once started I have to sort of rev it a bit to "clear" it out. Then she is tip-top, still hitin 40ish no prob and generally running very well. So what do ya think??

the bystarter would cause allot more problems then that, so thats not it.
how hard is it to start? mine does that some times. it takes a hair longer but its not 'hard' . 'hard' to me is holding the starter for 1 minute or so before it fires up.

Clean the carb.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

yeah that should help. even if its not the problem it always help. it is a good chance its carb. settings. the idle or air/fuel mix screw. you have get it all warmed up then set it. if you set it when its not warmed up you get stuff like that.

The carb is recently cleaned and the gas going in is good. It never cranks for more than a few seconds, sometimes I have to hold the throttle open, but still no more than a few seconds and she cranks, lassxt i had the bystarter out it was working fine and that was just a few 100 miles ago so I don't think anything could have happened to it. Four stroke engines don't like to start when they are hot but I didn't think two strokes where the same.

I know it sounds far fetch but I had the same prob with my 87 and it turned out to be the petcock. When it was under vac. it worked fine but when it was sitting it leaked into the case. Take it for what it is but its looking into. :D

Most problems are on cold starts before gaskets expand, check for old vaccuum lines and change them.

Gamemedic you raise an interesting issue. I know my petcock is a leaker, I actually have a replacement sitting on my bench. I was thinking that may be part of the reason for the bad starting but didn't want to mention it for two reasons. 1-to see if anyone thought that might be the problem, confirming my suspision and 2-didn't want to expose myself as the lazy person I am sometimes since the replacement has been sitting on my bench for a month already. Well I will change it this weekend or i might wait till the tank is almost empty 8) 8) 8)
