Won't run when warm.

Post by ramrace1 »

I have an all original Spree with about 400 miles on it. Starts fine runs fine when cold. After about five minutes or less of running it loses power. If you use full throttle it dies. Will not accelerate. Replace spark plug and cleaned carb. Any suggestions? Thanks.

How does the plug look after it dies? Sounds like a bad bystarter or connection going to the bystarter.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Where do you live? and what is the weather like out?

its below freezing were im at. the motor is super cold when i first try to start it. but pending were you live the motor might not be as cold when its off. Winter time, its kinda a good thing to say.
Sorry if that makes no since.

Welcome to the site :D
If you own a spree this site is a great site for all the info you could ever need. As well as a few "how to's " to get every last mph out of the spree motor.

Like Kenny said, the bystarter is a good place to check. [ bystarter= auto choke] [ there is 2 big things coming out of the top of the carb. one is the cable for the throttle, the other is the bystarter]

Plug looks ok. Live in Texas. Outside temperature does not seem to have an effect. Did not know about the bystarter. Can I purchase one at a local Honda dealer? Connection seemed to be fine. Thanks.

Test it by removing it and applying power, the needle should move (duh).

With the engine off? Maybe a dumb question.

Yea as in shut it off unbolt the bystarter, remove it from the wiring harness and then use a couple small pieces of wire or test leads to apply power to it from the battery.

Like everyone has said its either the bystarter or its running too rich. Test the bystarter, ther is a document in the tech doc forum. If it works it may just be running too rich and when it gets warmed up its too much.

Or it could be running lean and the by starter is richening it.
