Same principle, but now you can see the leaks in
Reeds
Seals
Exhaust
Gaskets

I'm not advocating smoking.
Perhaps bum a cigarette for the test?
I tried using a smoke machine. It worked the same but was substantially more money.

It's a stupid idea.
Don't take the pressures in an engine for granted.

Oh, I was thinking along the lines that pressures inside of an engine are very high, and that unless you're forcing pressurized gas through, then you're only likely to find relatively large leaks.

Crankcase pressure is relatively low, while top end pressure is high.
It's not meant to replace a compression tester but works well for checking
low pressure crankcase leaks..... reeds, seals and gaskets.

Average intake pressures in a two-stroke are relatively low, the key being "average."
The intake pressures are low on average because there's not a lot of temperature change going on - however, there a lot of pressure fluctuation - this is why taking off your air cleaner makes your engine seem louder - you're hearing pressure waves, and their pressures (while low in comparison to the exhaust end) are still very high in relation to ambient pressure in both the negative and positive, thus the "average" low pressure.
If anyone finds a leak with the thing, then IMHO it'll be a leak that you can easily detect visually.
