Clutch and Belt Questions

Post by wrxstiguy2004 »

First off I wanted to thank everyone for their advice and opinions regarding my electrical and engine problems. Without your help, I'd still have a completely useless scoot.... Thank you!

I have one more problem with the scooter and again call on the scoot gurus.

Now that the bike seems to be running well, I decided to take it out for a quick test run. During the run, when I accelerated, I could feel something thumping. You could feel the bike lurch forward also. My guess is that the belt is slipping from being 20 yrs old, and what I'm feeling is the centrifugal clutch kinda engaging/disengaging.

I removed the side cover to inspect the drive system, and noticed that the belt appears to be a little slippy. I could hold the clutch with one hand and rotate the drive gear with the other, and watch the belt slip...

I'm assuming it should be tighter than that....

Could this be the cause of my thumping and lurching?...

I'd appreciate your comments..

Thanks!

Yea its way loose and cant be adjusted. You either gotta give honda $20+ to get new one or go to the hardware store and try and match the old one up with a new one.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Honda stuff cost kinda allot, But you are paying for a high quality belt.
You can go to the hardwood store and get one that looks the same, but is a hair thiner/thicker witch will trow off things...
Honda belts will last allot longer, they wont strewth, they are just plain better. Just head to a 'Honda PowerSports dealer", if they don't have any in stock, they can order one in.

not a problem. I have put up guides in the tech. document and advance tech. decument part of this site on how to take apart the clutch and general stuff like that.
All my How too's were done on an elite, but the clutch is basically the same.

Ok..

Got the new belt and also picked up a new air filter. I ordered a new clutch weight set to be installed later.

The new belt definately fixed the drive issue... Thanks for the help!

Now I just need to get the fine tuning done. My low end is pretty scary.
When taking off, the bike shudders and has a hard time accelerating.

Always something!

Take a look at the "Won't run when warm" topic.... I need some advice again... (sigh)

Can't wait to have this thing done!

That shuddering is most likely caused by a bad or worn clutch.

Good point!

I've got a new clutch on order, so maybe it'll fix the shudder...

The bottom end is still pretty bogged down though, so I'll try moving the pin on the needle... as upsmale suggested to me on another topic.
