The place to discuss rides, accessories, or whatever is tangentially Spree/Elite-related

Site upgrade to latest V2 version of phpBB

Post by noiseguy »

Guys: funny graphics is due to site upgrade to the latest version of PHPBB. I'll get the graphics sorted out when I have time; until then just the generic subsilver graphics.

No need to worry about the board: The board will stay around as long as there are members posting.

i got a couple of questions for you...

1. So the Moderator is fixed?
(1.5. If yes, what members are going to be the new mods? the old ones kinda left the site..)

2. How will the site look? same as it always did? or a new color scheme? or a new site scheme?

3. Will there be any new features? Such as 'Quick Reply' or any thing?

4.If yes on question number 2, will you need any help photo shopping a new logo or banner or anything like that?

[Ill offer any help i can can.}

Yes, getting the moderator part fixed was one of the major reasons that I upgraded.

This is the final version of phpBB v2... v3 is not reverse-compatible with the SQL database (yet) so no likely upgrades in the near future.

I'm not planning any major changes to the site "look;" I played with several site templates when I first put phpBB in but maintaining them is a headache.

Spammers are a major problem that I'm dealing with; I need to get a mod installed that deals with them more effectively. I've tried a few but none have been effective so far. I've been manually validating accounts for about 2 years now as a stopgap; I used to get about 5 spam accounts for every legit account, now it's more like 20-1 and getting unmanageable. At 20-30 new accounts a day, it the main reason why it takes a few days for a user to get his/her account validated and become a posting member to the site.

As for site graphics; I'm always open to submissions. As a point of fact, I've only put together one graphic for this site, and that was only on the NukePHP version of this board and no longer used. All the graphics on the site (that were here before the upgrade and will be up again soon) were created by the members of this site. If you have a graphics submission, send them to my email account and I'll review them as they come in.

On a more general note, I'm interested in any ideas that members have for moving this site to the "next level." I've been wondering for awhile if phpBB is the best platform for hosting this type of board; there are many limitations in terms of information that can be presented and ways that users can relate to each other.

It may be a matter of adding plug-ins to phpBB, or moving the site to another platform completely.

Any ideas on this would be appreciated, esp. example sites which are configured in an interesting way have interesting features.

I personally really liked the original hondaspree.net layout you had years ago, it looked great, stood out and was very easy to use and navigate. But I'm guessing that layout was one that gave you the headaches?

If not, that one would be a nice choice to revert back to imo
projects galore :nerd:

That was the old NukePHP layout that got hacked. It was a CMS (content management system) that had some nice features and some real security problems.

Problem with NukePHP is that it went commercial, and I wasn't (and still am not) willing to fork out the $$$ to purchase and maintain the commercial software. At the time they wanted $99 for the licence... looks like that's dropped to $12 now.. heh heh.

Yes, and I finally fixed the ranks. Will wonders ever cease?

Also added the old phpNuke avatars back, along with some others that users had created back in the day of Spree and things.

Header/footer graphics are fixed.

OK: Re-modded board with the old anti-spammer stuff as well as some new things. We'll see how it works.

about fixing the ranks...
what are the Member Groups? it seems almost every one on the site is 5 out of 5 already.

And also, just so i 100% understand, instead of having a 'CB900F' ranking my ranking is 'Moderator' because i am a 'FAQ Moderator'. But being a 'FAQ Moderator' i do not have normal 'Moderator' powers, Right?

[PS- i can recognize almost all those sprees in the avatar section}

Ranks: Most of the people that post post a lot. I put the ranks in when I first started the board and most guys were under 100 posts. I may need to rebalance that figure...

Moderator status is anyone that's a moderator... there are FAQ, general, and the MMM moderator on the board (Darat is the MMM moderator, for example.)

My junk account filtering seems to be working; I've gotten no spam accounts over the last 3 days. Should have fixed that problem a long time ago.

Looks like my work on the site is done... for now.
