More problems with my "easy fix" Spree

Post by cochran »

Well, ended up today getting her going. I think I was still hydrolocking, it was still spitting out a lot of oil from the plug hole so I just worked and worked and finally got a putt or two and then she started. Good news, right?

Well, yes and no.........it won't rev up for beans. Can get it up to 15mph and that's it. No belt or clutch problems. I can't get it to rev up on the stand with full throttle. Any ideas? Remember I've already gone thru the carb really good and it has new gas and oil in it and the throttle IS being pulled up the whole way at full twist.

Secondly, got a nasty sound (whinny-growl) from the final reduction. Tranny oil level is good

I'am really wishing I would have passed on this "easy fixer"

plug chop?
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

probably try it this week.

This is acting a lot like my weedwacker when the exhaust screen is plugged up. Could the muffler be that full. How could I tell. It is heavy as all get out.

It could be the muffler, pull the plug out and look at it right now that will art least give you an idea of whats going on. The best way to clean the muffler is to make a big pile of logs set the muffler on top and light it, pull the muffler out of the ashes and rinse it out the next day.

pull off the belt cover and try and move the clutch around. look closly at the shaft the clutch goes on. if that shaft moves, and has play in it, the bearing OR the casing that shaft slides into is wore out. in other words....start lookin for another engine. i had a bad * spree engine at one time and my trans was making a screeeeching sound, and the casing was shot where the clutch shaft sits in place. u say the oil level is good. im thinkin bearings or the case itself.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I only get to work on this thing on the weekends so it may be a while til I get back with you.

I am thinking about taking the muffler off and seeing if it will rev up with it off. I know 2 strokes normally need a bit of back pressure. Think it will run ok just for a few minutes while I try and diagnose a stopped up muffler? Hey, what is the best/easiest way to clean one of these mufflers. I've see the torch thing and then the Drano method. What is your experience?

I too am thinking bearing somewhere in the drive system. The bearing that houses the clutch shaft is more likely to be bad than the bearings back at the final reduction?? I'll take the cover off and see if I have any up/down or side to side play in the clutch shaft. If I don't I am thinking final reduction bearings don't you think. Makes sense tho that the clutch shaft bearing would have more torque on it since it has the belt tension on it all the time where the final reduction shouldn't have that much torque on it, at least that's my theory. I hope it is not a case problem that would really put the "topper" on this ill fated project. Remember this was sold as an "easy fix". Guess that should have been my tip off that it was anything but!

Thanks again
