did the reeds have any gaps at all?
did you use new gaskets/were the old gaskets still good?
did you do the spacer on the carb right?

If you want bigger reeds you use a SB50 intake and reeds, of course then you have to use a blown petcock with a plugged vacuum port because there is no where for the vac line on the SB intake.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.
hah. Coincidence.
I had just done the exact same thing (dremeled the intake and then couldn't get the bike to run) when I read this. Turns out I did still have some water in it after rinsing the shavings out, I wasn't too careful about drying it. I was able to start it on starter fluid a couple of times and then after that, with no starter fluid, I just kept kicking it over and it slowly started running for a little longer each time. It took a BUNCH of kicks, but now it's fine.
I can't really notice much difference in power, but top speed increased by a whopping 1mph, to 31mph, probably because I haven't drilled out the exhaust yet so it's still choking there.

Slight reed gap is OK.
Why would adjusting the idle screw make it run?
My bet is that you put the thermal decoupler in backwards and now have a vacuum leak, or you didn't reconnect the air filter. Check that and post back.
