1986 Spree Wont run or dies quickly

I have had my spree for a little bit now and recently changed the battery, oil and spark plug due to excessive smoking. i also just changed the rear tail light because it was broken. that gets me to where i am now. every thing was running good before hand it started every time i tried and it ran good besides the excess smoke. today i just finished up changing the tail light and was going to do a plug chop that some had recommended but i couldn't keep it running. Do any of you have any ideas on where to start first?

Clean the carb.

Clean the carb and put a gas filter on between the petcock and the carb. It will help from carb getting clogged again.
