You can do it but it will require some modding to the spree frame(no more center stand, you will need to add a kickstand) Im pretty sure a bracket for the shock is also needed, other than that its pretty much plug and play. The value of a DIO type engine varies greatly depending on upgrades, coverall condition, mileage, parts included(muffler, carb, wheel, shock, etc)and who is selling it(random "running" ebay motors will obviously go for less). With that being said I would estimate between $100(stock, non runnning or runs poorly, fairly complete) to over $900 for a fully upped(bored, stroked, big carb, pretty much no stock unmoded parts) beast of a motor.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.
yeah dude. it can be done easy.
Tons of people put dio motors on sprees all the time. Its just allot more common in hawaii then it is other places. I hate to Link you to another forum but there are people there that have allot more knowledge of it them most members on this site. ForumsHawaii.Net - Moped and Scooters Enthusiasts.
These people don't really talk English they more less talk 'e-gangster' and they all brag about there own ride. But There are a few people there that give out good useful information. 98% of all sprees on that site have a DIO motor. If you ever had any questions about mounting or cables or something, i would just ask there.
Dio motors price verys were you live. Up in michigan were i live, most people dont know what a dio is. There for they are worth very little. Down in hawaii everyone wants a dio. There for they are wiorth allot there.
Your best bet is to look for crashed elites. I know a few people who found really good moped motors off crashed peds and put them on other bikes.
Look at like gauge sales, and junk yards, News papers, Craigs list Just about anywere.
Best of luck making a Dio Spree. I love seeing them done.

i went on ebay yesterday and couldn't find a dio engine but i did find a CH80 elite 4-stroke engine. it looks a bit big so i don't know if it would fit in a spree frame. i don't think that engine is as good as the dio any ways. oh ya, i got a realy dumb question. wat years do the elites have the dio engine in them

most non-dio elites dont have much that can be bought.scooter trash wrote:thanks. all elites do have a variator, right. wat are the advantages of the dio
A good exsample is my 92 elite vs my 96 elite (dio).
My 92 elite can only get a 63cc bore kit, high speed variator and other small small tuning things. even if i got everything possible im only looking at a top speed of 40-45.
My 96 elite has a dio motor. i can get bore kits that range from 63 to 127cc. (including the possibility for a stroker crank or water cooled). They also have tons of pipes that can be bought with them. And the most inporten thing, Gears.
See, a bore kit on a stock bike will give you tons of take off. but only raise your top speed by like 5mph. With a high speed pulley kit maybe 10 mph.
But on that same bike, if you add different gears. you are looking at way way way higher speeds.
Lets say you have a 94 honda elite (dio). you get the best 72cc bore kit in the world and put it on your bike. Along with carb and tail pipe, your top speed goes from 35mph to 45mph. Now if you put gears on that bike. you are looking at a good 75mph.
Finding a real dio motor is way smarter then finding any old elite motor.
Here is some one who put a SE50 ( a elite motor that is not a dio) motor on a spree. This is not a dio swap but still cool.

There used to be a member on here that did a sickk dio swap on a spree, with tons of pics and info but I think he got fed up with some bad folks and took down most of his pics.. diosoljah was his name.
And I mean his build was siiicckk, super clean and super fast.. it really sucks that he left.
He had started another spree build before he disappeared, can find that info here:

*edit* here's his original spree stroker thread w/ info but missing pics

HAH! After some hacking of his photobucket acc (its set to private view only) and disclaimer: not real hacking, but some strategic manipulation of link locations, I WAS ABLE TO FIND SOME OF HIS PICS!
They look updated, sine he now has a disked front on there.
See them now before they're gone yet again:
