it keeps the motor cooler.

No power boost. No incress in anything.

It just keeps the motor cooler. Helping to fight head seizes and helping your motor last longer. That is it.

And only at speed I might add, at idle you're actually letting less air in.

And if you're talking about ram air into intake, that is a pipe dream unless you are highly modded, even then draft air still works better.

you think?
seems to me that, it would help at speed. But at idea it wouldn't affect it.
I mean, the opening is still the same. It still allows the same amount of air though.
I guess if the fin was angled really strong (like some of the ones you buy) it would let less air. But if you make your own it shouldn't hurt it at all.

At ambient state (idle) with no ram air to cool, air would be drawn from all angles of the fan opening thereby increasing air at idle almost like a vortex. At same time with the ram air in place you would be limited to the angles present from the scoop only, decreasing cooling air draw again only at idle.

How much does this extend the life of the motor?

It also doesn't seem like it would help much if you did a lot of stop-and-go driving around town, or am I mistaken?

Has anybody actually ran a temp gauge with and without a ram air fin?
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

its a fact that heat kills motors.
The cooler the motor stays the longer it will last.

This is not one of those '' put it on and your motor will last for years!" things. Its just a small quick things that helps out.

Dac's right.
Thats why water cooled engines last longer.
The temperature is regulated for efficiency and long life.

Unless burnt_toast is right and the temperature is increased at idle decreasing engine life.
