Testing the alternator

Post by ShochuJohn »

I'm getting no spark and the alternator is at the top of my suspect list. How do I test it?

Service manual is in the tech area of the site.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Welp, I have another alternator as the readings I'm getting off this one are a bit sketchy. I'm trying to replace it and see if that corrects the problem. The service manual, as always, assumes tools I don't have. How do I get the flywheel off? They suggest a "flywheel puller" which screws perfectly into both the flywheel and the spindle. Where would I get such a device and/or are there other options? My attempts at improvising have so far failed.

You can buy a universal puller (a big slotted block with a big bolt in the middle) at a parts store.
