Greetings,
I just purchased a 1986 honda spree over the week-end and it was working fine Sunday and monday I made several trips going 30-35 without difficulty. until Tuesday morning on my way to work I was cruising along at 25-30 when the motor just stopped. I could start it again but when I tried to accelerate at all it quit. the gentlemen I purchased it from stated something about taping up one of the intake ports and retrying. I am a novice here. any suggestions on how to proceed??

It sounds a bit like what I just went through today after cleaning the carb out. Try squirting a bit of starter fluid in the air intake to jump start her a bit, then when she is running the vacuum will pull gas to the bowl. This is coming from a noob also that is learning fast by reading about every forum in this website between breaks on working on my 85 spree.
Did you put the screws back in at the proper turns? Did you mess with the float somehow?
And starter fluid is very bad on these little engines..best not to mess with it
