85 Spree problems at top speeds.

Post by bkitchen1015 »

I have an 85 Spree which runs great at low speeds. It accelerates quickly and is smooth until it gets to about 20-25 then unless I am really sensitive with the throttle it will start to die. When I hold the throttle wide open and it starts to die if I let off the throttle it comes back and I have to play with it to get it to keep running. Any suggestions? I have cleaned the Carb a few times as well.

Do you have an air filter? Whats the plug insulator look like after rididng it as fast as you can for a mile?
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Sorry it took me so long to get back. I have an air filter, and the plug insulator looks just about the same color hot or cold. I found a leaky gasket on what I think is called the fuel intake, where the oil and gas mix and go through a reed valve. I am waiting on the new gaskets and I am wondering if this could be the problem. I had an idea that it may be that as I get to higher speeds the vacuum would get stronger and with the gasket bad maybe it would start to pull in too much air leaning out the engine till it dies. Is this a possibility? Before I tore it apart, once I got to about 25 I could only hold the throttle at about 1/4 because after that is when it would die. The new gaskets should come in tomorrow or the next day. Any other ideas I should check?

yeah, i have an elite and it does the exact same thing once i hit high rpms it just dies and turns off, then when i hit a lower speed at about 15-18 mph it resumes acceleration.

If I feather the throttle right I can get it to 25 with me on it (190 lbs), with my fiance on it (125) it can make it to almost 30. I would bet it would go pretty fast if this problem didnt occur.

Your running lean(engine is melting inside, not a good thing), thats the problem. Probably the intake leak or somebody drilled holes in the airbox.

No holes in the airbox, one of the first things I looked for. I will post what happens when I put the new gaskets in.
