gutting the exhaust?

Post by snowdaze00 »

I know its not the best thing to do but i think our exhaust is pretty much trashed on the inside anyway. Not that long ago the exhaust was plugged and we did the fire pit deal and it ran great again. Now the exhaust is blocked again (less than two tanks of gas). I think there is so much junk in there rattling around it finnally got blocked.

We removed the exhaust and it ran great so we know it is plugged or blocked.

I want to cut it open and remove anything in there that is loose.

Any one have a suggestion on how to open up the exhaust? I was thinking of cutting int it on the back side so all the bolt locations do not move, then weld it back into place.

What do you think???

Can you weld it back together?
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Its not gonna run well if you gut it. Try dipping it in lye, might dissolve junk the fire dislodged.

i gutted my SE50 muffler. and cut it opened length wise and removed all the small pipes with larger ones.( the same size as the inlet) i can tell u it made a big difference in the way my scooter performs. my opinon, drilling out baffles is a waste, and u loose some back pressure. i could be wrong on the spree engines though.

I know my exhaust is clogged up i just haven't got around to fixing it yet. The guy who had it before me tapped the pipe right after it expands a little bit, but before the actual muffler and put a screw in it. With the screw out it has terrible take off, but a higher top speed. With it in it has good take off and a decent top speed. I just thought that was interesting...

well its gutted, all that came out was a round disk part with some holes in it. There is still a spark arester looking part that is where the large muffler part begins and I still have the small outlet pipe in place.

I took pics and will post later. We have not reinstalled the pipe yet to test the outcome

more to come after weh put it back together.

bottom end is the same if not better. keep in mind the parts I took out of the pipe have been rattling around in there for a while, so i really dont think we changed anything......... might have a bit deeper sound but seem to run well.
