Sprees don't have fuel pumps. Are you talking about the thing under the gas tank?

Thats a vacuum operated fuel valve called a petcock.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

If it flows fuel when you suck on the bottom hose its fine. There is a big screen inside the gas tank that keeps the crap out, internals are delicate(dont blow it with compressed air, you will break it) and you cant disassemble it.

Is it really that delicate? If so, I think I need to order a new petcock for my Elite...

I cleaned mine with a card cleaner bath and repeated blasts of canned air...

Is there a way to test that it's working okay before I reassemble the fuel system?

Yes, it's really that "delicate," though I wouldn't call using 60PSI compressed air to clean something a "delicate" procedure, esp. on something with a rubber diaphram.

Several members have trashed their petcocks doing this. Proper way to clean is to soak in clean gas for a day or two. You can check petcock operation by pulling vacuum on the lower line and checking for fuel flow on the upper line.

If you trash it, gas will leak from the lower line. You can cap it and keep using it, or buy a new one.
