Long Distance Trips

I am highly interested in taking "long distance" trips on my Spree once I get used to riding it (I haven't ridden a scooter in a couple of years) and give it a general going over with a plug replacement then plug chop, replace the mystery oil in the tank and maybe some fine tubing of the carb if need.

By long distance I mean 30-60 miles or more. Due to the road layouts around here, I will be mostly forced to take 2 lane US highways. Most of which have well paved shoulders but some do not. A few are deivided 4 lane with a wide shoulder as well (but not using exits so it's not "limited access").

I also need to confirm the legal use of a "motorized bicycle" on highways in Arkansas, Texas and perhaps even Oklahoma since it's not very far off.

Naturally I would have a nicely equipped tool box along for the ride. I would also take a small pup tent and a few camping necessities along to do some camping along the way in the many, many campgrounds up around here in Arkansas.

So I guess my reason for this topic is to ask if anyone here has taken long trips on their scooter? And if so, how far?

when i went up the the huge moped rally we all did like a 35mile cruise.
out of the 200-300 only about 15 bikes broke down. Most of them over heated. Not something you can really fix on the side of the road.

All i got to say is... Do It.
My hole "southwest Michigan Moped Mafia" will be doing some very simarl rides this year, but instead of going 60miles we will be aiming for about 100 at a time.
What you listed above is generally what you will need. I also recommend bringing zip ties and duck tape. Even if it looks sloppy it would get your bike home in one piece.

Add a ram air colling fin, make sure your plug chops coco brown and it should be good.

Jerry (original board member) used to take all-day rides with his scooters. 100 miles +.

My advice is to make sure the scoot's in good repair before you leave. That means:

1) Good compression (Over 100 PSI)
2) Fan system working and in place
3) Good tire condition
4) Good belt and clutch shoes
5) Exhaust, exhaust port, and head clean of carbon
6) 2-stroke injector oil and clean gas
7) Clean carb in good adjustment

Clean or new aircleaner
9) Working electrical (i.e. it's charging the battery and running the light)

If you just drive 5 minutes here or there, you can be short on a few of these and be OK, but on a long trip one of these can leave you stranded. Making sure you have all this taken care of should guarentee a good trip.

sometimes i drive my bored out elite 20 mileslong trips and after 10 miles or less it starts to back fire if i hold it at wot. i cant see anybody taking super long trips without overheating it. if you stop for cooling the cylinder. than i wouldnt see a problem with it. if it is stock it would ride alot longer than being souped up. im plaining on putting a 104cc watercooled kit to go even longer distances without heat seaze

Been about 10 years since I took a long trip on a spree but its really kick a** if you don't mind the sattle...
