Hi, I recently bought a Honda Pal ( SB50m)...Is there a way of making this already very cool little scooter to cruise at more than 40kph top speed less than 50kph? I understand there are a whole lot of devices like inhibitors and variators that can be adjusted/disabled to accomplish this.
Im not looking for a race bike...but I would like to acheive the speed limit of 50kph ( 30mph ) as the speed I go s too fact for push bike lane and too slow for normal traffic lane....( makes riding on open road a bit awkward ).
Any advice would be great

Honda Pal ( SB50m ) Help

Ray,
Glad to finally hear from another Pal owner. I recently picked up a used one here in the U.S. and have been having a blast with it. So far I've gotten it up to 45 mph, a little over 70 kph. My thought for what you could do is:
Pull off the exhaust, get a small mirror and check the exhaust port for carbon build up. Mine was choked about half closed. A bit of around 12 ga solid copper wire can be used to carefully clean out the carbon. Take it easy and do not use steel wire or any kind of hard tool, copper only.
Mine did not have a stock exhaust when I got it so I'm not sure what they look like. However the normal routine is to take as large a drill as will fit into the end of the muffler outlet and drill through a couple of the baffles. This removes some of the restriction from the exhaust.
Remove the intake manifold and look inside it. You will see that there are some really ugly sharp corners and edges. Smooth and blend the inside of the manifold. I used a round file for most of the work and some with a Dremmel type tool, die grinder.
Pull apart the front variable pulley on the belt trans. Replace the rollers if flattened (I bet they are) and make sure the belt is in good shape.
Go to the Honda dealer and purchase the next couple steps richer main jets for the carbs. Go one step richer. If you are not getting four stroking/blubbering at the top end then go to the next richer. Once you get rich enough to blubber at the top end then lean out one step. The needle in the carb slide can be moved up and down in this proces also. As you open things up it will want to run leaner and you don't want to sieze the motor.
I've also built a tuned exhaust system and modified the belt trans and air cleaner box, but for what you are looking for I don't think you need to go that far.
Please do keep posting and let us know how it goes.
Also, Can you get Pal parts there? From my research it looks like the Pal was JDM and exported to NZ only. I'm being brave/silly and modifying some of the parts that I just can't get here. It sure would be nice to find a source for some of them and my Japanese is really bad.
Thanks,
keithw

Let's give it a try, how hard could it be?

Glad we finally have a resident Pal expert... we get a NZ in here every few months looking for info.
I'd *really* like to get a physical copy of a Pal manual to scan in for the board...
PDF would be even better.

I don't know about the expert part but I'm happy to share what I've learned as I fool with mine. It would be very nice if one of the NZ folks could get you a manual to post. Even better if we could make a connection for parts.
Does anyone know if there are any more in the U.S. other than mine? I wouldn't mind picking up a second or some of the parts.
