Service Manual

Post by Capohanf »

I just bought a 87 Elite 50S and got the 87 service manual with it. Not being a mech, more of a electronic tech I am not sure what you need but I have the manual.

CDI location on 87 (not 88 or newer) Elite 50s

Post by 88lowrider »

Hi.
I need to know where they stashed the CDI and how to test it.
On the other manuals, they have a page, shows where its located and then how to test it.
Is it possible to get a copy of that page? That would be Way Cool for sure.

I have looked and looked and no one has a manual other than those Haynes ones.
What manual did you get with your scooter ??

I will make sure the "Notify me when a reply is posted" again.
I keep doing that but for some reason, I don't get notified, But, will keep checking in.

Thanks Bunches!!

1987 Elite CDI pinout for testing?

Post by 88lowrider »

Anyone else with a 1987 Elite manual that could share the page that talks about the CDI, where its located and how to test it.
Most important part, how to test it. I can disassemble the whole scooter to find it if need be.

Again, I am just going through the hoops here as mine has weak spark, I mean Really weak to where you almost can't see it.
I need to test the CDI then off to the other electronic parts that might control the spark.
I did test the coil as per the 88 and newer manual instructions and it seems to be fine.

For now, its just setting on the bench.

Thanks guys..

I found it. It is on the bottom side of the frame on the rear of the scooter.

Remove those bottom two bolts and you will see it.

1987 Honda Electrial troubleshooting info.

Post by 88lowrider »

I got this from Capohanf who has the manual.
He said he hopes to get some time to copy it and post it.
For now, this is for the 1987 Elite eletronics.
Now that we know the CDI is placed under the rear fender, all testing should well now.
88lowrider

in Chapter #16 TROUBLESHOOTING, for weak or no spark it suguests:

Faulty spark plug
Fouled spark plug
Faulty CDI unit
Faulty alternator
Broken or shorted spark plug wire
Broken or shorted ignition coil
Faulty ignition switch

Assuming you have checked all these and narrowed the problem to the CDI unit, in Chapter #14 ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT, under the CDI UNIT heading (which by the way is bolted to the rear fender):

Remove the frame side covers
Remove the rear fender mounting bolts from the rear fender
Remove the CDI unit from the rear fender
Disconnect the 5P coupler fron the CDI unit and make the following inspections

ITEM MEASURE AT JUDGEMENT

Main Switch Bl/W-G There should be no
continuity with the
ignition switch ON and
the engine stop swtich RUN

Exciter coil Bl/R-G 500-900 ohms

Pulse generator Bu/Y-G 50-200 ohms

Ignition coil Primary Bl/Y-G 0.1-0.2 ohms
resistance at (20 Secondary Bl/Y-Plug cap 8.6-9.6 k ohms
deg C/68 deg F) Bl/Y-without 3.6- 4.6 k ohms
plug cap

If abnormal, check part of abnormal line
If normal, wire harness is faulty
Replace the CDI unit if above iem is satisified

Got it running now, air cleaner replacement stuff ??

Post by 88lowrider »

Thanks for the help as I was able to find out that the Honda Spree CDI unit was the same part number as the one on my 87 Elite. I swapped it and I had spark.

It ran crappy so I pulled the carb off and cleaned it (lots of junk in it) and now its running.

The air cleaner was clogged up pretty good so I put out a pan of warm soapy water to clean the sponge rubber but it started falling apart.

Any ideas on what to replace it with ?
I didn't search the message board but will do if no one remembers.

Thanks again for everyones help.

Just order a replacement element. They are still available.
