So close to running awesome... Please help

Post by RideRed1 »

I just registered but have been viewing the site since about 5 yrs ago when I bought my first spree. Awesome site! Right now Im working on an 84 that I have had for about 3 years and am determined to get going now. I put new rings and a new cylinder on a few years back(due to exhaust broke off exhaust outlet of cylinder. Thanks again greg :) ).

Now for the problem. It will not idle unless the idle screw is about 1/5 a turn from all the way seated, It cuts out badly at wide open throttle. Midrange is awesome, just bucks and * at wot (only about 22mph).
Recently to try get rid of the problem I have tore down and cleaned the carb about 5 times throroughly(even removing emulsion tube), checked the petcock, cleaned out fuel screen, ported the intake, checked reeds(looked okay far as I could tell with naked eye), have checked for intake leaks, cleaned out airbox and lid, replaced air filter.. And im sure a bit more..

Now tonight I got thinking possibly the bystarter sticking, sure enough when I pulled it off the brass tube that holds the needle was stuck and had to remove with pliers. Looks like the cylinder for that tube has a bump in it that needs to be filed.

For kicks I left the bystarter completely out. I could set the idle as normal, and ran perfectly. I took it for a quick burn WOT and hit 29mph no bogging. If I cover the hole at all for the bystarter, It will immediately stall unless I have the idle screw almost all the way back in... Any ideas on my problem? I figured if it was a stuck bystarter, I could remove it and still block it with my finger and tune it ok... Thanks alot for the help!

If the bystarter hole is damaged (too long of a carb mounting bolt crushed it) file/dremel it till the by starter slides in and out all the way freely and if that puts a hole in the carb fill that part of the carb in with jb weld.

Thanks for the reply. What do you think as for the running badly even with my finger over the hole? Runs perfectly with bystarter completely removed....

It sucks fuel with the by starter removed, it sucks air to make up for it with your finger not there.

So the whole problem could be the bystarter getting stuck?
