1987 Elite 50s rough acceleration

Post by jeepvolks »

I've only had this machine since Saturday and I've almost brought it back from certain death. Anyway, it starts instantly and idles great. It also runs great at top speed around 35mph. When you start off from a dead stop or from a slow rolling speed, it stutters and bogs and then finally takes off and rips. I've replaced the plug, air filter, disassembled and soaked the carb in carb cleaner. Put everything back together and not much difference. What else could it be?

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

Plug chop
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

You might need to use a very thin wire to clean out the main jet. I have had to do that after multiple carb soaks for the very same symptoms you list.

My modified 87 elite was doing that, I up-jetted, smooth all the way from idle to top speed.
