Put in new plug now only 20 MPH

Post by Markymark »

I put in a new plug on my 89 elite 50 and added some gn2 and now its only getting up to 20 MPH barely. I also tried to find the air mix screw because the rear wheel would start to move pretty fast at idle but cant seem to find it, i thought i found it but once i loosened the screw a little some gas started leaking out of it. Now the wheel barely moves at idle and even if i change the old plug back in its still slow. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mark

Go to the technical documents section in this forum and download the Elite service manual. It will show you the correct screws for idle and air adjustments. You probably messed with the wrong screws and now your carburetor is way out of adjustment.

thats what i was going by but it looked like i found the right screw or else the screw is missing on mine. I did a plug chop and it was half soaked like a black color and the other half was like new stll, also after changing the plug it now smokes a little and it never did that before. The screw i messed with was seated and when i saw that it leaked some fuel i tightened it back up like it was before i messed with it.

It sounds to me like you messed with the carburetor drain screw which has nothing to do with adjusting the carb.

Yeah that makes sense, i looked at the picture again and i cant find the air/idle screw. Do you have an actual picture of it? in the manual the picture of the air filter cover doesnt look like the one i have.

Thanks

Well on a spree the idle screw is the one with a spring on it. The other screw is the air screw. Look for two screws on the side of the carb.

I have used both of those plugs on a spree with no difference. Perhaps your Elite is different. One way to find out is by putting your old plug back in and see if speed increases.

Well on the Spree the '84 thru '85 uses the BPR6HS and the '86 thru '87 uses the BPR6HSA and guess what changed in 1986, the head changed too, as did the compression.

Hondaman laughs and dismisses you with a wave of his hand!
Now to get back to the problem at hand. You are saying that your elite was running good until you changed the plug. Is that correct? All you did was change the plug and did not touch anything else but the drain screw.
Is that correct?
