Ghetto gear pulling ideas
Anyone have any good ideas of how to pull and press sa50 gears without a real press? I have an idea with a jack and some wood - what have you guys tried?

considering most shops will do it free of charge. id just take it in
they are hoping to build a good rep, so they don't charge anything. Just call around and just ask "i have a gear thats pressed onto a shaft, how much to have it pressed off, and a different one pressed on?" im guessing 2/3rds will say no charge

i have tried many many things, a press is basically what you need. Its on there way better then you think....
like the other people said, most places do it for free because it only takes a second.

go to a local MACHINE shop, smoething that does machine work, don't take it to a automotive shop, or anything like that.
I can only guess what it would cost, but I imagine $10-$30..
Our local machine shop, pressed 4 control arm bushings out and pressed new ones in for my car, and also pressed in 2 wheel bearings, ALL for $40!

Either buy a cheapy press at Harbor Freight with a couple of buddies or find a used one, 80 tons no less at an estate sale, like I did for $100 and split the cost with a couple of other gear heads. Now we all have a press whenever we need one.

they might do it cheap
Our local shop, actually is mainly a transmission shop lol now that I think about it
but they also surface heads for cars, surface blocks, press, bend, all kinds of stuff
I just think a place like that, would do you a LOT better deal then going to a scooter shop, or a motorcycle shop, or even a car shop

We are only talking a couple of horsepower max. The torque number has to be embarrassing. A press fit should do just fine.teeoce wrote:Does pressing the gear on really work well enough to prevent the gear from slipping? Is it just a really tight fit?
