87 Spree...Ugh

Post by gitRdan69 »

I finally had everything to get my spree running, got her to start, tuning the carb and clunk!!! Starter wont crank it over, kick start wond move...*...Back to the basement, pulled the head, exhaust, and jug, low and behold, the wrist pin retaining clip is gone and there are two nice gouges out of the side of my jug, and the piston is in pieces in the bottom of the crank.

SO here is the catch, I have enough money into getting the title transfered to justify spending more on the project, which will probably go into winter, but I am not sure if I should get the parts to re-build stock, or end up going into a different motor set-up, to facilitate mods, some maybe now, or later on.

Can anyone sway me with leads on a good base motor, I think I've read about dio's having alot of available parts, I just dont want to get too extravagent right of the start, going 35-40 is all I want, as this was a purchase to save gas...

Thanks for any advice!!

You can't buy any performance parts for the spree. If its going to be down all winter, then i would port the intake manifold and mill the head. You can search around on this forum and find everything you need on how to do that. Sorry about your luck, but its good that 35-40 is all you want, because thats all you'll get, and only with some work.

You can make a spree go 70mph no problem, need around $700 to buy and build the motor to drop in.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

if the spree motor is that bad, i say dump it and find a 94-01 honda elite motor.(dio)

i know they are hard to come buy, but once you get one speed comes cheap, parts are easy to get, and you will have much respect for your Spree-Dio.

with a dio motor, $110 will get you gears and a pulley, that alone will put you about 50mph, and believe it or not get you better mileage then stock. With a light spree frame you might even get better speed yet. Plus if you ever wanted to upgrade later on, you could build up a 72cc, a mini stroker, or even a full stroker race engine. The possibility are endless.
