Aftermarket variator

I have a 1896 Aero 50 and I'm considering purchasing a Keli variator. I would love to have a higher top speed but I live in a very hilly area. Does anyone know how much acceleration/hill climbing ability is lost with the Keli variator kit?

the pulley dont hurt take off.

it gives you some more top end, and your take off stays the same. Climbing hills you might even be a hair faster.

on my 87 aero, i gained about 5 mph on the top end and it climbed much better than stock...i had to lighten the rollers a bit though...

How did you "lighten" the rollers?

You replace them with lighter rollers.

Any place that sells variators are going to sell rollers. Where are you getting your variator at?

i say VT Cycles, there a great place to order from, there prices are cheap, and the guys that work there are very beginner friendly.

i didnt know they made the aero 50 in 1896

i didnt know they made the aero 50 in 1896

Thats why the seat is so big on them, its to cover up the boiler for the steam engine.

the aero 50 runs hot to begin with so a front pulley will only make run hotter= heat kills 2 strokes!

i have a lathe, so i just chucked up a set of stock rollers, which are made of vastly superior materials than any aftermarket ones ive seen, and drilled the metal centers out a few thousandths...then i weigh them on an accurate scale, and viola, lighter rollers...i guess if you dont have a lathe you could make some soft jaws for a vise and go to town with a drill....carefully
oh, and i cut a hole in the rear body panel and made a scoop that directs high pressure air into the cooling fan...runs much cooler now

You do know that on the Spree, Aero, and Elite, the cooling fan actually pulls air from up underneath the seat, around the cylinder and blows it out through the fan shroud on the side, right? That's why each of the two rear body panels has three little intake vents near the floor of the scooter. That's also why the fan shroud has a baffle on the FRONT of it. All you have to do is look that the direction of the fins on the fan to see this. And maybe I misunderstood what you meant by "a scoop that directs high pressure air into the cooling fan" but if that scoop is directing "high pressure air" INTO the black fan shroud on the right side of the scooter, it's either not doing anything or it's probably a good idea to remove it before it causes your motor to overheat.
