Spree wrecking drive belts

Post by ShochuJohn »

Hey all,

My '86 Spree keeps wrecking drive belts. It just went through it's third in about 10 miles of driving. They don't snap. The chords around the back of them remain intact, but the belts disintegrate. How it happens is that I am riding along at full throttle and then, without any warning, the engine revs up and no power goes to the wheel.

I find this all very wierd. Has it ever happened to everyone else?

Possible burrs on drive pulley or clutch. I had that problem when the drive pulley splines on the crank stripped. Some pieces of metal created some burrs on clutch. I just took a screwdriver and "knocked" the burrs off. Does this make sense?

Burrs on the clutch pads themselves? Is the idea that the belt is getting minced by errant pieces of metal on the pulleys themselves or that they are somehow interfering with the clutch such that it randomly stops rotating, thus wrecking the belt?

Burrs on the pulleys not the pads. The surface the belt rides on. You will have to tear apart and inspect (I didn't see the burrs on mine until I spread the cluth pulleys). Check front pulleys too....small burrs= lot of damage to belt!

Are you using Honda belts or automotive ones?
