Doesn't seem to be a difference with wires hooked up directly to battery or normaly.
I've had the top end apart, all is clean and piston moves freely and same with the exhaust off, port is clean.
If the plug has to be loose for the starter to spin the engine, then it isn't OK, the starter is bad. Why are you insisting the starter is good when it won't spin the engine over under normal circumstances? :roll:

I think you have a weak starter. Contact Greg at uspmale@yahoo.com for a replacement. He may also be able to check out your current starter.

OK, tried new to me pinion AND starter motor from Greg, SAME darn thing, it engages properly but will not turn over more that just a little?!

When the side cover is off all operates just fine...

Given up and am getting a kick start conversion.

Don't give up so soon. The side cover may be THE issue. Is the prescribed gasket in situ, or did you substitute Hylomar goo for that hard-to-find part?

Y'see, thet-thar gasket performs a not-so-vital sealing function, keeping water out of yer belt. But it also performs a critical spacing function. Without it the starter motor's shaft is pinched tighter'n a Junior Prom date.

If your gasket's gone, and you crank down those 8mms, it won't spin.

OOPS.....Better get me some of those gaskets.

i've found that that d*** bendix is also a culprit sometimes. make sure it spins freely, or else it can also cause a perfectly fine starter to jam up.

Replaced my bendix and the starter fired my 84 spree right up.

Thanks Guy, my manual shows no gasket and doesn't even mention one.
That's the 1st I've heard, thanks again...will cut one out tonight.
Tried 2 different benix/pinion to same result.
