Boysens for CT Manifold feeler

Post by burnt_toast »

Alright, check this out guys. I've heard that Boysen reeds can give you something of a 10% power increase over the fiberglass reeds that come in with the large CT manifold.

But.. No one sells them! Everyone that used does not stock them anymore.

I've personally contacted Boysen Engineering who has finally replied, and would like to try to get some of these awesome reeds in the future if they can cross reference them. :)

I've sent pics but now need to measure the actual reeds which I will try to do that soon hopefully, because I don't want to waste time with this opportunity.

It's all still tentative, but I would just like to get a feeler here of anyone that may be interested.

Having dealt with Boysen in the past for custom reeds. We sent them a set of stock reeds to make patterns from. They even returned the stock reeds with the new ones. You do know you can get bulk material from them to make your own? Have them make two stage reeds if possible as they will help both the bottom end performnce and the top end. Take the 10% number with a grain of salt. However the do increase your engine power.

I use them in all of my personal bikes. Just make sure you order the correct ones (#708). Installation is simple, remove all of the metal pieces and only use what comes with the reed packaging, you will need 2 for your CT manifold.

The reeds may or may not make a major difference however the most noticeable part is throttle response is better on the low end. It's also possible that you might need to step down on the jetting (go leaner) 1 step as Boyesens will tend to make things run richer (as a result of having a softer primary reed).

An unexpected and welcomed reply Bear. Supposing I were to get the bulk material, what would be the best way to cut it?

Arnadanoob is #708 the part number for the actual reeds that fit the CT mani?

That is the part # specific for Honda Dios. I have them in my CT chrome/black and KRS manifolds.

We always used an pair of sewing shears that were very sharp and were kept that way by not cutting anything but reed materials (paper and cardboard ruin scissors). If they have a kit, buy it though, as it is a whole lot easier.

i had to make my own carbon fibre reeds for the stock aero reed valve, i cut the rough shape on a band saw with a fine tooth blade going very fast, and finished with files and sandpaper. worked great until i found out malossi made a reed valve for it!

boy howdy do i. there is one catch to the malossi reed valve. it is the same bolt pattern and shape as the stock one, but the edge facing the cylinder comes up about .030 short of the other. there is a .030 gap in other words, on the side that you cant see. oh it got me good. two days later i figured it out and made an adapter out of .188 aluminum that sealed the gap. works awesome now. ill get pictures. its one of those things thats so easy, but if you didnt know would leave you very frustrated!

.030: Might As Well Be a Mile

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings;

Sucking in air from around the reed cage could be a Bad Thing. So you just cut yourself an aluminum gasket? Well done. Do you think paper gasket material would work as well covering so small a gap? Maybe with some of thet-thar Yamabond to glue it down?

I wonder how Malossi missed the dimensions so badly.

If you can get me an Earl with a Part Number I may spring for it, if it can use the stock carb. I gotta stop spending on this thing... :)

50cc.eu has even cooler ones made by doppler!

its not that malossi missed any dimensions, its actually for a dio...i got a SA50 reed cage and intake tube, and it confirms it.Imagethe one on the left is sa50. the one on the right is nb50. see hoe the nb50 goes just a bit up more past the bolt holes? the bolt holes are identical, and the nb50 is actually larger. paper definetely would be no good. all i did was trace the nb reed valve onto a piece of .188 aluminium, could have used .125, and cut it out. about 30 minutes with a bandsaw and a file got er done. haha youve got a snowball now!

You're right about the snowball. Now I gotta find a better pipe, more carb, shave the head, stroker crank, machine the ports... :)

my friend, youre headed down a steep path! malossi has a high compression head that kicks things up a notch, 50cc.eu has an awesome arreche 19mm carb for about 100 bucks, good luck on a pipe, geeez.
if you find a stroker crank, let me know where you got it!!! we should start a fast aero 50 club....

Reaching Goals

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Thanks to all for the encouragement, support and laughs.

My goals in setting this Aero up were to:

1. Have sufficient performance to be safer in traffic on surface streets, which in this town typically runs 35-45. I have that already. I may or may not install the Malossi gears when they arrive because of goal 2.
2. Satisfyingly brisk acceleration.
3. Civically responsible sound levels.
4. Retain reliability.
5. Avoid constant need for tweaking once the relaunch maintenance and setup was complete. (This scooter was comatose for over 7 years when I bought it...)

I think I'm there. Total cost including tax title & license was about $1200.
Insurance was added to our GEICO motorcycle policy - we have 2 Sportsters - a whopping $12.00 more per year! :(
I have a horn issue, need a seat hasp and that's about it! :D

Time to ride!
