I have a 88 elite lx, with a top end rebuild and cleaned carb.
I have to kickstart it with the key on, but with the run switch off. like 5 times and then turn the run switch on, for it to start, once it starts it runs fast on the kickstand for a couple of minutes, then idles fine. It runs smooth, but then it slowly dies out if i do not keep the throttle going. After it shuts down, i have to wait about 15 minutes before i have to go thru the same process to get it started.
It sounds like the idle is smooth, should I adjust the air mixture to fine tune it to keep it at idle or is it a possible air filter problem?

This has been said many times I'm sure (even though I'm new here) is that over 90% of the problems like yours is due to a dirty carb. I know you might have thought you cleaned it well but it takes a while to do it right. Just spraying through each of the orifices may not be enough, you might actually have to go with a fine guitar/piano string to get into the tiny holes to dislodge any crud that may have accumulated in there.
The other way to do this is a parts soak for just under an hour, but you have to make sure you remove all rubber gaskets and seals otherwise it will swell up. This includes removing your float pin and not letting it soak along with the carb body. Again, you may need to go with a guitar/piano string to get into the ultra tiny holes just to make sure. Then finish off with a final spraying with carb cleaner and let dry.
