1984 Honda Spree Cleaning Petcock valve

Post by AustinS »

I've read the maintenance manual and searched all over and can't find any instructions for cleaning my petcock. The manual shows some sort of strainer valve which I don't see anywhere on my model. I've sprayed out the valve with carb cleaner and reinstalled but I can't get it to send fuel to my carb.

if i suck on the vacuum hose it sends fuel perfectly but what causes the carb to make this sucking action?

Thanks!

I'll leave this for the spree guys but it sounds like it's working to me.

The intake pulse makes this sucking action. There should be a filter/strainer inside the tank, look with a flashlight.

Ok I got the strainer out and cleaned it up and then I realized that the pulse action was really strong and was not an issue. I took the carb off and if I covered the spot where the carb is with my hand then gas shot out of the petcock. So it seems to be that the carb is not letting gas come down. What could cause this? I follow some instructions to disassemble and clean the carb from the tech docs, could I have put something wrong that causes the float to tell the pulse that it doesn't need fuel? Does this make sense?

The carb just receives fuel from the petcock and keeps the bowl full. No pulse is involved with the carb. Clean the carb again carefully playing with the bowl parts when the bowl goes up and sits level it should be shutitng off flow, as it drops down slightly it should flow.

Another trick to these things is they sometimes have priming issues. Hold your hand over the intake while cranking, I have to do this to my spree if it has run dry/sat in storage for a long time.

thanks kenny. I'll give your suggest a try.

The only thing new I can report is that if I take the carb off and then crank and put my hand over where the carb goes then it will start spurting gas out of the petcock, but when I reinstall the carb it doesnt spurt the gas on crank. Is the vacuum not being created because of an empty carb?

I'm going to try priming like kenny said and will report back.

thanks again

Well that worked.... BUT

as soon as I uncover the intake it quits sending fuel to the carb. So it will start and run if I keep it covered and let a little air in also through my fingers but otherwise dies because gas quits flowing.

What does this sound like? I dont know what to do next

You NEED the full unmodified factory air filter setup!

Greetings:

Suggestions:

1. Remove the manifold and examine the reeds carefully. If there's a gap between the petals and the plastic block, replace. I can make them in carbon fiber.

IF that's not it,

2. Re-clean your carb - search carb cleaning and read everything you can. It sounds like fuel is only getting through via "bypass" channels. Something's still clogged.

There is no "pump". None. Zip, nil, nada! Fuel is gravity-fed. When there's vacuum on the petcock, the fuel will trickle down. The float keeps the level in the bowl constant. Engine vacuum does the rest. If the reeds are munched, the vacuum may be insufficient. If not then the carb is the problem. If not, there's no compression, but you said it runs with manual choke, so it's either 1 or 2.

It's working!

The spark plug wasn't gapped properly and a couple of other issues all combined it now works.

Now it has no power!

Time to move on to the drive train. Thanks for welcoming me to the forums!
