Whining Noise

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Nobody over in WTB has been particularly helpful, so here goes:

Have you at least pulled off the shroud?

I'd bet a nickel that there's a leaf or a twig or a squirrel's nest in there. Stuff can break spontaneously, but it's rare.

I would still wonder if the stator is under load (short somewhere or dead battery), as I know car alternators/generators will whine rather nicely when under a heavy load...also, he needs to pull the shroud off and see if any of the fins are cracked or broken, that might be making the noise.

Beware, the battery does more than just supply the electric start with power. It also acts as a "sink" for surplus electricity when your engine is revving very high. It prevents the voltage from spiking when you rev up the engine suddenly, without it, you may blow bulbs/fuses. Some people have had this happen, but, then again, other people have been running without a battery for years....your shot, I guess.
