took off my variator today cause I just ordered a new keli high speed one. After taking it off I noticed that the back plate is missing. The thing that holds the back covering the ramp plate.
I'm conserend because I see pictures with the back on. And mine doesn't have it. It's completely gone!!! The bike shifts fine. But I'm worried if I replace it with the new vario I may lose the weights in the case and catastrophic transmission failure!!!
Honda-san in his infinite wisdom designed the stock variator rollers to run in a grease bath, hence the big o-ring and chromey cover. Evidently your scooter's previous owner departed from the True Path and removed the cover to run the variator dry. Most of us on here too.
BT is right in that reinstalling the cover will rprevent the variator from allowing the belt to shift all the way up the pulley - hence ut us a "restrictor". I'm pretty sure it doesn't block the stock variator - much - but the aftermarket ones are designed to close down the belt space between the pulleys a little tighter. The Keli has a groove for an o-ring and holes for those 3 little screws, but I didn't install the cover.
If you have a "catastrophic transmission failure", you'll have bigger problems than replacing a $5 set of rollers.

Most of my money is spent on scooterparts. The rest is just wasted.

My biggest consern was that the rollers and ramp plate would come loose in the cover and fly around inside. Seems I am safe to run it as is. Once my keli gets here I'm going to replace the old one anyway. Thanks for the help. Now I'm a lot less scared.
