83 Aero throttle stuck wide open, please assist

Post by dwpedalplayer »

So I have a 50cc honda 1983 aero/lead. Was driving around fine the other day, but I checked the throttle sleeve/jet/spring valve assembly that sits atop the carb and when i reinstalled it- The scooter wouldnt start.

So, I dropped a spot of gas in the cylinder, it started up, but instantly revved all the way up. Its seemingly stuck at wide open throttle, And I would like to believe its the cable, throttle sleeve or something but i manually pushed the throttle jet needle sleeve all the way down to where it should idle and no luck, still all the way open. I took it completely out, no change. Disconnected some vacuum lines, no change. So Im not exactly sure what it is. Ive hooked all the vacuum lines up correctly, cannot find any cracks or leaks, and have checked and re checked to the service manual the installation of the throttle valve and sleeve assembly.

Basically this is my only issue, and before, it started on the first try with the starter- everytime.

The only other issue I noticed is that before this happened I would be driving it on the road and it would never open up past 2/3 throttle. It would just sputter until I let off. Occasionally it would open up all the way.

WOT

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Check throttle cable from handlebar back. Casing may be hanging up or binding. Cable splitter can go bad or just jam or get dislocated during handling.

Throttle slide spring can be tricky to reinstall. Throttle slide has a notch that mates with a peg in slide bore. Look for an obstruction in there. Bent jet needle? Priceless loose diamond?

Assembly error in all these can cause IWOTS (Involuntary WOT Syndrome). Otherwise. It's a bad cable. Kill switch for throttle makes for an exciting ride!

Most of my money is spent on scooterparts. The rest is just wasted.

you may have installed the throttle slide backwards, remember the larger half moon goes to the rear.

FIXED!

Post by dwpedalplayer »

Sadly the problem was so anticlimactic, Im embarrassed. It turns out that the throttle valve was 180 degrees opposite its correct position, It wouldnt fit earlier, so I assumed I had it correct with the slit facing me. But I was wrong, I went back out to check the throttle screw, and tried it the other way and it slid right down to the bottom, fixing my problem and placing it back at idle.
I still however had the problem of it sputtering and cutting out after mid throttle at 5-6k rpms. But I decided to try and clean the filter, and low and behold, it worked, I squeezed some excess oil out, flipped it inside out and voilla': it now climbs to its max power effortlessly.
As a side note I smell like a monster truck show and am a bit dizzy from the exhaust in the garage but, alas. Fixed.
whew.
Now the throttle screws themseles apparently dont do anything for my scooter though. A bit puzzled. turn them nearly all in, or all out, and nothing.
