spree died

Post by spoch »

Hello all,
just bought 1986 NQ50. it was running okay but had some bogging at take off and once stopped. Thing runs great at top speed 27 mph. I was waiting on air filter and other parts when I took it for a ride. I put new gas in it and a little carb/gas treatment in prior to it having new problem. Spree was running for about 1/2 hour at different speeds when it started to bog down. It finally stalled and smelled as if it flooded out. Pushed it a mile home trying to kick start every couple blocks. Not even a hint of firing. After about two hours of sitting in the garage you could still smell strong odor of raw fuel. Haven't tried to start since pushing it home. Tomorrow I will be changing plug/air filter and checking to make sure It has spark.
My question is... since putting fuel treatment in could it be causing the problem? Should I drain the tank prior to putting in new plug? I always thought that with treatment it would run a little hot due to increased alcohol. I still have good compression so I don't think it is a heat up losing compression thing. I will most likely clean the carb since I will be changing every thing else.

Any ideas or suggestions? Sorry bout the long post just trying to get it running properly.

Were you running it for 1/2 hour without an airfilter?

To tell you the truth, I bought it off a police officer that told me he had it overhauled about two to three years ago. He said it was only ridden in the summer and it was at his cabin on a lake(I picked it up at the lake). I ordered the stuff to do a tune up to it, but since it seemed to be running half way good I took it for a longer then normal ride. Thats when this happened. I work 24 hour shifts so tomorrow is the day that it is coming apart and i'm going to find out whats up. just trying to get an idea of where to start.

Thanks

He also told me that he had to spray it with starter fluid to get to start. When I got it home I never had to use fluid. A few twists of the throttle, some kicks (no battery, on order) and it fired right up. I really think my problem is it flooded out due to gas, old plug, old filter, and a dirty carb. Just looking for some advise to get it running for the summer.
Thanks again

I hate to tell you, but it sounds like you ran it lean and burned it up. How's the compression?

Sounds like float failure or something of that nature.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.
