Drilled holes in my exhaust = +10MPH!!!!

Post by delorean696969 »

Hi, new to this forum and recently acquired a free 1986 honda spree from a relative. After sitting for several years, I drained out the gas and put a can of STP gas treatment and full tank of gas and it fired right up!

It didn't have much power and struggled to reach 25mph. So I did some research on this forum, and ended up drilling four 1/4 holes in the rear of the muffler. The difference is night and day! I have more low end torque and now reaches 35mph without any issues.

Next will be removing the vairiator restricting plate from the transmission??? I searched for a DIY with photos, but couldn't find one. Can anyone post a link or DIY with photos?

Thanks again! 8)

Spree = No Variator

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

I hate to be the one to break the news to you. Sprees have no variator. You can install a 44mm bore kit that's appeared in the Forum and on eBay lately, but if you're hitting 35 already, you're ahead of average.

A larger rear tire will add groundspeed. It seems up to a 3.00 may fit. Or dude, swap in a Dio! :)

Nice score and good work getting it running.

Ah nice, thanks for the tips. What about the pulley mod, will that work on the 86 spree? I saw it in the technical docs section, but no pictures. (I like images) :wink:

2.75 is pushing it. I had a SA front wheel on my Spree and the 3.00 tire rubbed on the fork tubes. It rubs on the fender a bit too.

2.75 tire for front, 3.00 on back. I managed to squash a 3.50 on my 85 a long time ago, but it just *barely rubbed the case and wore out the side wall, not good...

Haha, well congrats on getting your scoot to go faster, could you post some pics of where exactly you drilled the holes? that'd be great!

Okay, here is a picture of the four holes I drilled in my spree. It's a lot louder though, I will mention that. I only drilled about 4" in (through the first baffle) and that just happens to be the perfect amount of back pressure.

Iowa Sprees have a washer welded inside the header tube where it connects to the cylinder. Remove the pipe and use a step drill to remove it. Should gain you at least 5MPh

as long as the washer is removed, it should have the same effect as a non-restricted exhaust.

congrats on the extra power, but doesn't drilling holes in the exhaust make the muffler louder?
